There was an old lady who swallowed a fly….

This past Friday I had the pleasure of performing a concert of Broadway hits with Salt Marsh Opera at the stunningly gorgeous and fancy Ocean House in Rhode Island. A place so fancy, I felt weird walking in the front door in denim shorts. Seriously, check this place out:

Ocean House

I was so thrilled when the fabulous and multi talented pianist Cathy Venable recommended me for this one. Who wouldn’t love to sing some Broadway hits in a beautiful setting? I spend so much of my life singing to exit signs that this was a welcome change of pace. Although, singing outside does present special challenges; wind, weather… bugs.

I, have a big mouth. I know this about myself. See exhibit A & B

I’m particularly fond of exhibit B, as it shows full on high note face with a clearly usless microphone.

So, maybe it should come to no surprise that in the middle of signing Vanilla Ice Cream a fly made a bee line for the back of my throat. Yep. I am the old woman who swallowed fly. While still singing, I thought to myself; “can I make it to the end of this song whilst choking? No. No I cannot.”  So I had to stop, excuse myself, and I think I said something along the lines of. “Excuse me, I think I just swallowed a fly.” Because sometimes you need to acknowledge reality and you’re own humanity. I was cheered on by the audience as I quickly exited to have a sip of water. What’s great is that, if you know this song it’s about a gal writing a letter, getting carried away and then returning to write her letter.  So, when I returned to the stage I said something along the lines of: “I guess I’m the old lady who swallowed a fly” and got to resume the song at “Now, where was I.” I hate to stop in the middle of a song, but at least it was extra funny!

On to my next adventure….
